4. Questions and answers.



  • Why are there so many descriptions of nature and landscape in the novel?
    In my opinion it's very important aspect of the novel. Wuthering Heights wouldn't be Wuthering Heights without it. From the very beginning we learn about this place. "‘Wuthering’ being a significant provincial adjective, descriptive of the atmospheric tumult to which its station is exposed in stormy weather. Pure, bracing ventilation they must have up there at all times, indeed: one may guess the power of the north wind blowing over the edge, by the excessive slant of a few stunted firs at the end of the house; and by a range of gaunt thorns all stretching their limbs one way, as if craving alms of the sun." The landscapes are very beautiful but at the same time frightening. These descriptions make the readers feel the atmosphere of actions. I suppose that the author used a implicit comparison between nature and Heathcliff. He is closely connected with nature and he is like a reflection of it. He is a pretty beautiful man but very severe and cruel deeply in his soul like nature in the novel.
  • Why did Linton furiously hate Heathcliff?
    It's a rather difficult question for me. Maybe I don't understand something. I think that Linton is a very selfish and spoiled man. Behave yourself like Linton is humiliating and basely. Maybe he was jealous of Catherine because she spent all her time with Heathcliff. Maybe he thought that that friendship would lead to disaster, he was afraid of it and wanted to protect Catherine. I don't know the verity but I have in my mind Linton like an unpleasant, vile and nefarious person.
  • Why did Heathcliff become an anti-hero?
    He had a difficult life. When he appeared in the Earnshaw family he was subjected to humiliation and mockery from his foster brother. But Heathcliff was a very calm and even tempered boy in his childhood. He endured every hurt he received. Then, he grew up, but Catherine, his lovely Cathy betrayed his and married Linton. After it, he became an anti-hero. He began to retaliate.
