Vocabulary (2).

• Dree- tedious; dreary- тягомотный. Nick's story was really dree but interesting so I listened to it attentively.
• Bewitched- lovely, delightful,appealing -очарованный, заколдованный. She's so bewitched in her new black gown.
• Scruples- a moral principle that prevents you from doing something that you thinkis bad- угрызения совести. He betrayed his friend with no scruples.
• Fall back upon smt- to use or do something else after other thingshave failed- в нужде обращаться к. She didn't know what she should do in this complicated situation and she in her despair fell back upon her stepmother.
• To fling- to throw something carelessly or with a lot of force- швырять. In a fit of rage she flung a mag that was in her hands.
• Lamentation- words or actions that show that you feel very sad, for example whensomeone dies- причитания, плач. Your lamentation will no use for you, you're on the brink of the grave.
• To be on the verge of madness- to be almost mad- быть на грани сумасшествия. Don't hear her silly words, she's on the verge of madness and she does not understand what says.
• An ally - someone who is ready to help you, especially against someone else who is causing problems for you- союзник, помощник.You're my ally and we'll win this game together. 
• Slovenly- careless, or untidy- неряшливый, неопрятный. It's often happens that creative people are slovenly but more than somewhat genius.

• Waywardness- Deviating from what is desired, expected, or required, especially in being disobedient or in gratifying one's own inclinations- своенравие, непослушание. Everyone served her because of her waywardness.
• To harass- subject to aggressive pressure or intimidation- изводить, тревожить, расстраивать. He tried to harass his enemy every time he could. 
• To be delirious- talking or thinking in a confused way because you are ill- быть в бреду. She talked absolute delirium, probably, she was delirious.
• A coward- a person who lacks the courage to do or endure dangerous or unpleasant things- трус. You are a bloody coward if you can't say all the truth!
• To eat with a relish- to eat heartily- есть с аппетитом. After two days of her starving she ate even dried bread with a relish.
• To mope about- to spend time somewhere with no particular purpose, feeling bored orunhappy- бродить, хандрить. Everyone left her, she was absolutely alone and she moped about lonely streets all day long thinking about her  yearning and futility.
• To be forbearing- to be patient and restrained- быть снисходительным, выдержанным. He was very forbearing to her but she was crotchety and didn't respect it.
• Infernally- hellishly- адски, чертовски. I want you to be aware that I know you have treated me infernally.
• A traitor- a person who betrays a friend, country, principle, etc.- предатель, изменник. I was true to you but you've played traitor with me.
• To dart off- to move quickly out of something toward someone or something- срываться, помчаться.When she heard the vile and hurtful words, she was about to dart off.
• To strangle- squeeze or constrict the neck of (a person or animal), especially so as to cause death- душить. You're a madman! How dare you try to strangle me?!
• To thaw the ice between smn- to make relationships between two persons better-растопить лед между кем-то. After a long divorce, they met again and something magic or divine thawed the ice between them.

11. Aspects of the culture reflected in the story.

This book is of another century so we can see a lot of differences between modern life and life that described in the novel.

• First of all, I can not help noticing that people lived in huge houses with gardens and they lived in big families.
• There were social inequality because one girl from good family couldn't marry a poor man.
• Many people often read books in the evening by candlelight.
• There was always a housekeeper in a house.
• Travelling was something strange and people mostly were at home.

7. A letter.

Well, I wanna try to write a letter on behalf of Heathcliff to Catherine.


Dear Cathy,
How are you? I hope you're fine and happy.
You hurt me but I miss you so bad. I was forced to leave you because I couldn't see you with Linton anymore. You made your own choice but I can't bring myself to wish you happiness because he's blackguard and you will never be happy with him because you you don't really love him, I know it and I feel it. I dreamed, I believed that we would be together forever but you see how some absurd circumstances can turn out things.I can't live up to the hilt without you. I'll be back some day or other.
Yeah...what about me...You needn't worry about me. I'm OK. I'm working hard to take revenge. Such a life makes me stronger.
You know, I'm not angry with you now but I'll do everything possible to be with you again. Don't you remember that we are the one? Everything will be as I want it be.
I'm still loving you...

10. My opinion about the story.

What I liked about the story:

• Unusual structure of the novel: resolution was the first and the story is told on behalf of the servant Nelly Dean.
• Gripping story- you are never bored.
• Mysteriousness.
• Wonderful  descriptions of the nature.
• It's not just a happy love story, it's real, sometimes, cruel world with all its pain and grief and also love and happiness.
  

What I didn't like:

• The tragic fates of the characters.

4. Questions and answers.

• Why are there so many descriptions of nature and landscape in the novel?
  In my opinion it's very important aspect of the novel. Wuthering Heights wouldn't be Wuthering Heights without it. From the very beginning we learn about this place. "‘Wuthering’ being a significant provincial adjective, descriptive of the atmospheric tumult to which its station is exposed in stormy weather. Pure, bracing ventilation they must have up there at all times, indeed: one may guess the power of the north wind blowing over the edge, by the excessive slant of a few stunted firs at the end of the house; and by a range of gaunt thorns all stretching their limbs one way, as if craving alms of the sun." The landscapes are very beautiful but at the same time frightening. These descriptions make the readers feel the atmosphere of actions. I suppose that the author used a implicit comparison between nature and Heathcliff. He is closely connected with nature and he is like a reflection of it. He is a pretty beautiful man but very severe and cruel deeply in his soul like nature in the novel.

• Why did Linton furiously hate Heathcliff?
  It's a rather difficult question for me. Maybe I don't understand something. I think that Linton is a very selfish and spoiled man. Behave yourself like Linton is humiliating and basely. Maybe he was jealous of Catherine because she spent all her time with Heathcliff. Maybe he thought that that friendship would lead to disaster, he was afraid of it and wanted to protect Catherine. I don't know the verity but I have in my mind Linton like an unpleasant, vile and nefarious person.
• Why did Heathcliff become an anti-hero?
  He had a difficult life. When he appeared in the Earnshaw family he was subjected to humiliation and mockery from his foster brother. But Heathcliff was a very calm and even tempered boy in his childhood. He endured every hurt he received. Then, he grew up, but Catherine, his lovely Cathy betrayed his and married Linton. After it, he became an anti-hero. He began to retaliate.
